With technology’s prevalence in business today, upper level executives should be as involved in the technology behind their business as in marketing, sales, or operations. It is the magic behind and what allows all those other units to run efficiently.

Here’s 3 things every CEO should know about security:

Perimeter security isn’t enough.

“Throw a firewall on it and we’re good!” doesn’t work anymore. A firewall and proper equipment is integral to internet security, but it is only one slice of the pie. Employee training is arguably much more important! Even with the best firewall, if someone on the inside gives an attacker access, such as through an e-mail phishing attack, the firewall is useless. This leads nicely into our second point:

Most security breaches are from manipulation or human error.

There are recent studies that have shown the majority of breaches could have been prevented with better user training. Phishing is the fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers.

Security is an enabler, not an inhibitor.

Some organizations see tightened internet security as an inhibitor. They think it’s going to hold them back, and keep them from doing their jobs. That’s not the case, if it’s done right.

Let’s take file sharing for example: You have a file server in your office that you connect to when you’re on the road. To tighten security, your organization restricts remote access to the file server to prevent outside attacks. This increases security, but decreases productivity and employee mobility.

A better solution: Implement a cloud file sharing solution which stores your files in a datacenter much more secure than your office closet, while INCREASING productivity and mobility.
